Bravo! T&T dodge Cobras to meet Blues in final

Australia were on their way out of the 1999 World Cup. Captain Steve Waugh was in the middle of one of the all-time great ODI innings. Herschelle Gibbs dropped his catch, a simple one. To rub the salt further on Gibbs’ woes, Waugh immediately told him, ‘You just dropped the World Cup mate’. And it turned out to be true.

Ten years later it came to haunt Gibbs again. Though this time he was not the culprit, but some of his Cape Cobras team-mates dropped the Champions League T20 as they grassed at least five simple catches to allow Trinidad and Tobago to enter the finals of the inaugural Champions League T20 here on Thursday.

Riding on high luck, Trinidad and Tobago clinched the match by 7 wickets as the South African teams continued to prove themselves to be ultimate chockers in cricket when it comes to handling the pressure at crucial junctures.

Despite posting a big total of 175, Cobras could not win the match as the team from West Indies held their nerves all through the match. Be it Ravi Rampal, who bowled an economical last over, or Dwayne Bravo and Daren Ganga, who played important innings to guide their team to the final when Cobras were looking to peg things back.

Bravo played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 58 at a time when they needed more than 10 runs per over. His 34-ball 58 consisted of four fours and three sixes. It was he who made a stiff target look easy in the end with his powerful hitting and sealed the match in their favour with four balls to spare.

Skipper Daren Ganga, too, kept his cool and helped his illustrious partner send the South Africans on a leather hunt all over the park. Ganga played a crucial knock of 31-ball 44 and remained unbeaten in the end.

Chasing a stiff total of 176 for victory, Trinidad and Tobago openers- William Perkins and Adrian Barath- gave them a tremendous start as they whizzed past fifty in just the 5th over. But immediately after that they lost William Perkins through a brilliant run out. Perkins made 20 off 16 balls with the help of four fours.

Duminy then removed the other opener Adrian Barath for 29 to restore some sanity as the batsman was going hammer and tonk in the middle. Barath’s 16-ball cameo contained four hits to the fence and two over it.
